How to best manage your remote interns ⭐️

It can be hard to figure out what exactly you want your Commsgrad to work on, so we’ve put together a loose structure to get you started. It’ll be different for every business and Commsgrad, as an internship host you get to lead the direction of this experience. You are welcome to colour outside of the lines, as long as the work experience is only within the comms bucket and DOES NOT include engaging with media. If you are looking for an experienced publicist, we can point you in the right direction.

Organise a time to have an initial call or Zoom to get acquainted.

This can happen ahead of the internship start date if you like. (max 30 mins if so). The idea is to catch up and learn a little more about each other, to get an understanding of what is going to be equitable and of value for you both. You can check out our Commsgrad Content Hub to have a look around at what other Commsgrads have gotten up to during their internships.

Make a top-line plan for the 6 intern days

  • Week one - the easiest kind of tasks that could help quickly get up to speed with your business (PRO TIP: Asking them to do a website audit/review is a rapid fire way to get them across your business), marketing materials review, competitor research, finding new images to use in social media, etc)

  • Week two - social media posts

  • Week three - writing blog posts

  • Week four - strategy brainstorming for marketing or communications ideas (once they are more familiar with your business by this point)

  • Week five - revising and editing blog and social media posts

  • Week six - wrapping up any work they needed to finish

Again, this is just a starting point. You’re free to structure the internship how you like as long as it's working on an activity in the comms bucket, aka things that are relevant to a Commsgrad to learn or practice.

To make it a great experience for both your business and the intern, it is recommended to chat through the things they need to know to do a great job for you. That doesn't’ mean holding their hand every two seconds, but it means not expecting them to know everything 🤓

What happens when your remote internship ends?

Time flies when it's only 6 days! We will send you an email in the last week with some links to a short online form to fill out (few mins), the info in these forms is where we get your couple of sentence reference for the Commsgrad to include on their CV, and whether you would like to extend with your intern, or move on to the next (and when). We really appreciate these forms being done, they literally change people’s lives and help them get future jobs. So thank you in advance!
