Below is an interview on gaining work experience with Roy

How hard is it to gain real-world experience?

“It's extremely difficult to gain work experience as an international student. Most companies refused to interview me because I was not a PR/ citizen. I got short-listed for interviews with two startups, however, both refused to pay me for the internship. In the end, I did an internship-style company placement through my university in exchange for subject credits.”

What do you believe is a strength of international students, which can help them get recruited?

“International students bring with them a diverse perspective to tasks and organisations. This can help improve the end-product while reaching a larger audience. International students are also resilient and able to adapt more easily- they literally moved to a new country, so they are well placed to deal with challenging and uncertain situations in the workplace.”

Diversity is much-needed ammunition for every organization. According to Harvard Business Review, The most diverse organisations were the most innovative, as measured by their revenue mix. Diverse teams can also better identify products and services that fit the needs of emerging customer profiles. It also facilitates better decision-making in the organisation.

At Commsgrad, we believe in diversity and follow an unbiased internship assigning process. We welcome you to share your experience via International Students Interview Q&A Forms. Sharing your story will further help Commsgrad gain insights and understanding, and ultimately provide a better experience for our international students.
