Commsgrad Placement Experience: Meet Karen

Welcome to the Commsgrad Placement Experience! Here we will be sharing the experiences of some of our Commsgrads, to give a deeper insight into what it’s like to do an internship through Commsgrad.

For this weeks Commsgrad Placement Experience chat, we spoke with Karen who completed a remote internship placement through Commsgrad. Check out what she got to work on below:

Why did you join Commsgrad?

I joined Commsgrad because I saw it on Flex Mami's Instagram story! Since I was also in my last semester of my communications degree and wanting to get more experience, it was a no brainer - especially since Commsgrad provides unbiased placements that are remote and short-term.

What did you get to work on?

I was really grateful because I got to work on a lot of different things in such a short period of time. I did a lot of research, built up a social media content plan, and drafted some PR ideas for the business. I also got to work on the backend of the website, and got to see a lot of the behind the scenes action of a business. My internship host was super kind and helpful, both trusting my skills while teaching me a bunch of new stuff!

What was the best thing you got out of your experience?
A job! Not only did Commsgrad allow me to gain hands-on experience in the things I learned at uni, but also make genuine and valuable connections. I'm grateful to be able to constantly learn new things, increasing my skill set and my confidence.

What is a key learning take away from your experience that other Commsgrads could like to learn?

Be open-minded! When you're put in such a new environment - outside of a classroom, working with new people, not really knowing what to expect - it's super daunting. It's easy to stay in your comfort zone, and it's also easy to do work that you've simulated at uni. But I think an internship is the perfect time to explore and experiment in new things that you might've never had the chance to! It's a great opportunity to keep an open mind and say yes to challenges.
