Commsgrad Placement Experience: Meet Jeneane

Welcome to the Commsgrad Placement Experience! Here we will be sharing the experiences of some of our Commsgrads, to give a deeper insight into what it’s like to do an internship through Commsgrad.

For this weeks Placement Experience, we spoke with Jeneane who did two remote internship placements through Commsgrad. Check out what she got to work on below:

Why did you join Commsgrad?

I joined Commsgrad during a period of unemployment (thanks, pandemic) where I was wanting to increase my skills, knowledge and experience to make myself a better candidate when I applied to jobs. I appreciated that Commsgrad didn’t ask for my resume or a certain level of experience to join, and the opportunities looked super valuable.

What did you get to work on?

I ended up completing two internships, both offering such a diverse range of tasks. With one internship, I was doing a Media Implementation Plan where I had to research different relevant media outlets for my supervisor’s business and draft pitches - something I hadn’t done before. For the other internship, I was helping with her ‘Marketing To-Do List’ which consisted of important but time-consuming tasks like auditing her client’s websites, writing articles and blog drafts and working on her client’s brand messaging.

What was the best thing you got out of your experience?

Luckily, I now work with one of my supervisors on a freelance basis! Aside from improving on and learning new skills, being able to experience different roles and tasks in different types of businesses is helping me decide what I enjoy and don’t enjoy and how I want my personal career journey to look like.

What is a key learning take away from your experience that other Commsgrads could like to learn?

Advocating for yourself - while yes, you are just a student it’s important that the internships are mutually beneficial and that you are learning things that you want to learn and will help you grow professionally and personally. Employers also appreciate it when you know what you want, what you’re worth and what you can bring to the table.
